Large Rubber Stamps From Rubber Stamp Champ
Rubber Stamp Champ welcomes Nick Watney to the zone, and admires the winning spirit he brought to Torrey Pines this weekend. Watney showed up at Torrey Sunday with the killer attitude that he had the leaders right where he wanted them…he was five shots back on a course that had threatened the complete extinction of birdies and eagles in the windy wet weather.
The day began with a classic wet-noodle-duel between the the green skimming snake Camilo Villegas, and the would-be hero who lost thirty pounds, Rollins, who led the whole tournament, and then lost the lead and the day to go along with the thirty pounds he’d dumped. Don’t know why, but the moment has never eluded two final round leaders like it eluded those two, and right from the start they were making and shaking…as in making bogeys and shaking their heads…you know, they can’t believe it broke the way it did, or drew back the way it did, or landed in the lie it landed in, or whatever…that syndrome. The sexy Colombian and JR kept looking like they were going to either puke, crap their pants or both.
Watney meanwhile, appeared to be walking two feet off the ground in a group a few ahead of theirs.
In fact, Watney put his shoes on in the locker room that morning and walked all the way to where he sank the winning putt on 18 without ever changing his pace one beat. He strode out to the first tee, and around the whole course to 18 with such calm purpose, that you almost didn’t notice he was hitting shots at all, let alone hitting them better than everyone else.
The look in his eyes told it all and even made Villegas laugh on 18, where Watney’s penetrating pupils showed he was a man who had been so intensely focused on the task at hand that the entire world, fans, golf course and media circus around him had evaporated into non existent fairy dust…and the only thing left in his universe was his will, moving forward with the certainty of a heat seeking missile.
No single shot he hit all day was more important than his hybrid from 235 yards on the par-5 18th that easily cleared the pond and settled on the top shelf of the green. He calmly rolled his long eagle putt down the slope to just inside 3 feet, and knocked in the winning putt after Rollins failed to get up-and-down from the bunker.
While those around him choked on the severity of the moment, Watney got into the winning frame of mind that it took to overcome everything and overtake everyone.
