The USDA has special requirements for inks to be used in food handling and packaging.

Wooden handle stamps, hand stamps, traditional hand stamps, wood handle stamps, there are a ton of names for the old fashioned type of hand stamp….most have been replaced now by self inking stamps and pre inked stamp, but there are still a number of uses for the traditional old rubber hand stamp, made possible, originally by a guy named Goodyear.

After pretty much ruining his financial life by conducting endless years of unsuccessful ongoing experiments in his kitchen, Charles Goodyear eventually accidentally dumped one of his ill fated rubber mixtures on a hot stove, and found out on trying to clean the mess up, that if you removed the sulphur from rubber then heated it, it would retain its elasticity. This process called vulcanization made rubber waterproof and winter-proof and opened the door for a enormous market for rubber goods. On June 24, 1844, Charles Goodyear was granted patent #3,633 for vulcanized rubber.

The traditional hand stamp is still used in many cases where the newer, more modern self inking and pre inked rubber stamps are not used.  Hand stamps never run out of ink for one thing, and as long as you have a fresh stamping pad or a freshly inked stamping pad you can keep on stamping.
